Little Bit of Braille

As you know one of my signature collections is the braille pendants and necklaces as well as braille keychains and now also rings. The other day I received a really great gift from a fellow jewelry designer, Leslie Ligon of braillestone.com who found me through Etsy and we talked about our designs and common interest in braille.

Leslie lives in Dallas and promotes Braille literacy within the sighted and blind communities through her braille jewelry like the bracelet she sent me. (to the left) It consists of the whole alphabet in braille with the letters on the inside.

A portion of her sales proceeds are donated to Braille Without Borders and BrailleInk.

On that note... A little bit about this type of writing. Braille can be found in almost every public space and often goes unnoticed by the sighted...but take a closer look next time you're in a public elevator or office. You'll find those clever embossed dots next to numbers and buttons and next to offices and restrooms.

Named after its inventor, Louis Braille, the braille system uses a basic “braille cell” which consists of six dots grouped in two vertical columns of three dots each. The dots in the first column are numbered one through three and the second, four through six. Organized groups of dots in the cells represent letters and numbers. For example, the letter “D” (in the chart below) can be expressed as “dots 1, 4, 5.”

The story of Louis Braille is actually quite interesting as well--
Louis as an 11 year old blind student revised secret military code and used it the basis for written communication for blind individuals. The original military code was called night writing and was used by soldiers to communicate after dark. The code used a twelve-dot cell two dots wide by six dots high. The problem with the military code was that the human fingertip could not feel all the dots with one touch.

Louis Braille's revised reading method is based on a cell of six dots. This improvement enabled the fingertip to encompass the entire cell unit with one impression and hence quickly move across cells.

Another interesting tidbit is that His published code,Procédé pour Ecrire les Paroles, la Musique et la Plain-Chant au Moyen de Points, also contained a braille music code based on the same six-dot cell. Cool, right?!

Countdown

One week until the movie release of Alice in Wonderland - 3D! (March 5th) I'm pre-ordering my tickets!

In the mean time I've added to my own Wonderland jewelry with little post earrings. These tiny silhouettes have been hand cut from 20 gauge sterling silver...and what a feat that was to try to get the tiny details! Yet well worth it... I think ;)

Lastly, I'm still having a good time with ring designs. These follow the slug design, where a cute little creature wraps itself around your finger. So....what do you think?

on a roll

I've been busy making and remaking.
I'm bringing out all the vintage and antique items I've been collecting for my "vintage rehab pieces".

These pieces come from all over. From the antique market in Buenos Aires, to little Reading, Vermont... to my local flea market on capitol hill- Eastern Market.

Also introducing these fun new "swing earring" designs which are available in sterling silver or 14k goldfill.

Lastly, something i've been wanting to do for a while and I finally stopped procrastinating and made them:
NINJA STARS!

I don't know why but i really love the idea of carrying around a ninja star around your neck. Always ready for action!

DIY

Design Sponge had this great DIY wednesdays... last wednesday ( or maybe it was 2 weeks ag0) they had this DIY trivet from a knot... which i thought was so cool.

I started playing around with different materials I had laying around such as leather cord and silk cord.
I made them much smaller than a trivet... more like notions... so I was left trying figuring out what to do with my new little creations....
Of course I made some jewelry from the little leather knots but i also made a cute hair clip with the small silk orange knot which I'm wearing right now.
YAY!

I'm still brainstorming on the other silk knots.
I think they would look great on a blouse or dress.. a purse perhaps... or what about a closure for a wedding invitation? We'll see...

Try out the DIY trivet from a knot... yourself and see what you come up with. It's fun!

About Goldfill Jewlery

I use both sterling silver and gold filled for my jewelry designs. A lot of times people ask me what gold fill is and whether it will wear off... The answer:
No it doesn't wear off, it doesn't really tarnish...and looks great with the summer tan. ;)

Okay... maybe a little more information is needed-

Gold filled looks and usually wears as well as karat gold. Often referred to as rolled gold,. Gold Fill jewelry is very hard wearing and should last a lifetime under normal wear conditions. Heres a little more info on this fabulous material along with some of my newest designs using gold fill chain and wire.

(Via Wikipedia)

Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating, and 17 to 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate. By definition, the minimum layer of karat gold in an item stamped GF must equal at least 1/20 the weight of the total item.

Chesapeake Bay, MD

Living in D.C. the closest beach I can visit is on the Chesapeake. I go there several times a year not only to enjoy the coastal breezes and get some sun but also to collect sharks teeth for my jewelry.

These shark's teeth are miocene era fossils that erode from the cliffs. I spend a couple of hours collecting these tiny little beauties sifting through the shore.

On a sad note, the Chesapeake is also one of the more contaminated waterways and has seen a decline not only in the water's cleanliness but in the natural wildlife. The Washington Post just did a really interesting photo journal of the Chesapeake watershed sharing some of its history and current physical state that i think is worth a read.

(Also worth a look is a great slide show featuring aerial shots of the watershed.)

This summer I'm donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of my shark teeth jewelry to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation...

Every little bit helps. Considering it's the only beach I have I'd like to continue enjoying my visits there for some time to come.

I'll be making new designs all summer so be sure to check in often ;) Here are some of the classic designs i'll be keeping in stock as well:
